Living life on your own terms and finding yourself

It is really important to find yourself in your life and live a life that is true to you. Below is a short list of reasons why you should start living your life on your own terms and start being you for you.

1.    You see more of the things you like in life and less of the things you don’t.

When you start to embrace who you truly are with the things you truly like such as activities & experiences, books & movies, you spend your time filled with what you enjoy and the things you don’t like will naturally find their way out of your life.

2.     You start to have more fulfilling relationships.

Being honest about who you are as an individual is so important and vital in order for you to connect with people on an integral level. When this happens, your relationships and the connections you make feel richer and fuller. The relationships which were inauthentic, start to leave you, just like the activities that weren’t fueling your passion.

3.     There are always going to be people who like you and get you for you.

There’s no need to pretend to be someone you are not anymore. You start to see that people will accept and appreciate you for who you truly are, probably more than originally expected. You will also learn that those who don’t support you are probably not people you need around anyway and there are always people who will be there for you and who will like you. (See Toxic People and how to deal with them)

4.     There is no need to fight yourself anymore and you find you are really at peace.

This is probably the best reason out of all of them. You finally accept who you are on the inside and this shines through to your exterior. Both your inner and outer start to harmonise and the people around you will notice your new glow.

5.     Instead of being trapped by expectation, you are now truly free.

Peoples expectations really don’t matter anymore. what people think of you is no longer your concern and unless they are building you up, their opinions aren’t needed. Free yourself from their burden.

6.     You no longer find yourself being confused and the answers you need are more often are waiting for you.

There is no longer any reason to look outside of yourself for an answer or for guidance as you are able to look inwards and trust your own judgement. Look inside and you will find the right answer. You know what is needed.

7.     Everyone around you sees you are awesome and you just start to realise this truth.

The reality that you are awesome just the way you are, really starts to shine through and instead of letting yourself go to waste, you begin to embrace your own awesomeness and the experiences you gain from your new found reality reflect onto the world and people around you as well.

8.     You are happier.

When you really start living a life that is true to you everything becomes much more vibrant for you and in turn, you become much happier.

Is water really the source of life?

I have one question for you… How much money do you think you have spent on bottled water over the past 5 years whilst travelling overseas?

If you are anything like me then I am assuming you have spent a great amount so far. It is a common fact that unsanitary water can cause illnesses such as diarrhoea & vomiting and it is very important to avoid drinking tap water or when brushing your teeth especially in countries with poor water sanitation.

Does that mean that you should be prepared to spend lots of money on bottled water?

Travellers heading overseas are almost always advised to avoid the local tap water and only use bottled water but it’s alarming when you take some time to look at this properly. The “drink bottled water” advice can be quite dangerous when based on the assumption that the bottled water you’ll be drinking is of the same quality to what you are used to back at home.

Quite often, bottled water has been filled with tap water, re-sealed and then resold to make a further profit with no real care with regards to the implications to your health.

So, if you can’t guarantee the safety and quality of bottled water, what other options do you have?

A lot of people think that drinking tap water is okay but you only have to switch on your TV to see some of the latest news surrounding water standards in well-developed countries. In most developing countries, and like previously mentioned, some of the best known developed:  freshwater sources can and are largely contaminated by industrial waste which is dumped directly into rivers and streams… An estimated half a million tonnes of PCBs were discharged into our environment during the 20th century.
In most, if not in all developing countries and even some best known developed countries – Fresh water sources can be largely contaminated by industrial waste being dumped directly into rivers and streams, an estimated half million tons of PCBs were discharged into the environment during the 20th century.

In 2012, the United Kingdom was voted as 14th in the list of OECD measuring 0.4 death rates due to unsafe WASH services per 100,000 population with the USA being in 6th position with a 0.6 rating along with Canada and New Zealand.

So tap water is unsafe to use due to metals, microbial and chemical pollution but surely bottled water if sealed is okay to use?

The cost of bottled water alone is extortionate and if you’ve ever been stuck waiting in an airport, train station or petrol station, you know how much this can cost especially when there is no other option nearby.  Maybe the cost doesn’t upset you too much, after all, it is so much better than drinking tap water right?

There are countless studies showing that bottled water is often less regulated and tested than tap water and is not treated for any metal contaminants. The plastic alone carries over 24,000 chemicals, are not BPA free and is linked to long-term health complications.

Long-term health complications as well as being financially costly, what makes this worse then is the amount of plastic pollution harbouring our environment to date:

We are killing our biosystems more each year with the rapid growth in plastic pollution.

On average, 46,000 pieces of plastic are swirling in each square mile of our oceans and estimated to represent almost 80% of the total marine debris floating in the world’s oceans…
Every year, at least one million birds and 100,000 sharks, turtles, dolphins and whales die from eating plastic, whilst on average, a plastic bag will be used for about 12 minutes, they stay around for 450 years when left on a beach.

Bottled water is not only damaging to your health, financially costly but also killing our biosystem and getting worse each year…

What if there was a more affordable, proven and safer way to drinking water? Global Travel Adventures may have found the perfect solution for you:

Team Livelihood UK

Earlier this year, I took part in an international development project in Bangladesh working to identify & help develop entrepreneurship in a rural community.
During the evening and my free time, I was thinking about and looking into how I can bring all my passions into one place and help other people get motivated to chase after their own dreams.

So many people see me travelling, having fun and volunteering and often say “Karl… I admire the fact you do all this cool stuff and I have a lot of respect for your volunteering and helping people who need it… I wish I was able to do it BUT I would never be able to get the time off work, I have too many commitments back home to even consider going away like you do.”

It became apparent to me there is a massive gap between what people are currently doing and what they really desire to do… and maybe…. Just reading this is making you think that I am writing about you right now?

The truth is there are so many people living life like they have a second chance at it later on…  There are so many people I know who talk to me and express their fear of death yet I can’t think of anything else scarier than just existing. Literally going day by day completing the same mundane task with no actual passion or goal to reach.

At the same time, so many people say “YOLO, you only live once” when the exact opposite is true, you only die once… You have so many opportunities to change your life and live it the exact way you want to! Team Livelihood UK is a movement helping you identify exactly what you are wanting to achieve in life so you can take the steps towards achieving it.

When I was sat down one night in Bangladesh going through the conversations in my head, looking at my own life and where I want to be heading, what I want to be doing, I had one of the most profound experiences, what I saw was just incredible and I am excited to be sharing this with all of you right now.

Imagine a network of driven and motivated individuals dedicated to improving their own lives in all aspects through Healthy Body, Generous Heart, Personal Development, Strong Finances & Empowering Others.

Consider being involved in a global team of changemakers who are laser focused on chasing their dreams, helping each other to reach their own goals and empowering and uplifting everyone around them to do the exact same.

Team Livelihood is not going to be for everyone and if you are reading this right now and you are truly happy with everything in your life then I am extremely happy for you and I would definitely like to hear from you so post a comment and let me know who you are. It would be awesome to speak to you 🙂

I have never seen something so clearly before and this is an exciting time especially for those of you reading this who are looking for something bigger than what you are currently seeing in your life. The universe works in ways which are unexplainable but if there is something you feel that is missing then there is a very good chance this has come at a perfect time for you and your life.

Team Livelihood is all about helping people get from life what they are looking for especially those who are:

  • Passionate about doing & becoming more than what they currently feel able to.
  • Advocates for tackling global issues facing poverty
  • Looking to make a change but (with their current circumstances feel helpless)
  • Feeling like they could and who are wanting to change the world
  • Interested in involving themselves with an international organisation in its early stages
  • Wanting to personally develop and share their stories to empower people around them
  • Looking to secure their futures financially whilst inspiring others to chase their dreams

TeamLivelihood is going to help so many people over the next few years especially those who are involved with it and the vision I have got for this is huge.

If after reading this and you want to know more, please post a comment below introducing yourself, you can also contact me using the contact form by clicking here

I would like to help as many people as possible with this so if you have any loved ones and friends who are always talking about doing more, if you know people who are constantly talking about needing to “break away,” have people in your circle who are ‘always in the clouds and dreaming a bigger life’ then it is important for you to pass this to them. Seeing the light on Alcohol

This is my personal experience with Alcohol & I am hoping this post can and will help you take the steps you need to lead a healthier life.

Most people enjoy going out and drinking and I was definitely one of them. I used to enjoy going out and drinking (mostly every night of the week).Over the last two years, I used to say that working in the clubs was a just reason to drink and that I just loved the party atmosphere, I would normally find a reason to drink. I remember feeling great, being on top of the world and having countless laughs.

I and my friends used to find the idea of me not drinking for even a day funny and we used to make comments about me not being able to function properly without beer hilarious… I tried the Stoptober (no alcohol for October) last year and think I got a week in and caved in…

So many people enjoy how it makes them feel; more confident, fewer worries with a sense of being relaxed and in a better mood.

Well, I spent 12 weeks in Bangladesh without touching a single drop, I found the cutoff easier and without any real desire to drink. I come back to the UK and have had 4 nights out since my return (excessive drinking) & I’m honestly confused how I was able to put myself through feeling as awful as much as I did.

There is nothing great or relaxing about not being able to look at food the next day due to a crippling headache and the desire to vomit every time you move. Going over the night before in your head does nothing to boost your confidence when you realise what you do and say to people.

It took me 12 weeks of abstaining from alcohol to realise how unhealthy and damaging this legal substance is.. Proud to say, I’ve seen the light.

Looking back, I can honestly say the whole thing is purely based on mindset. I was thinking going to Bangladesh and not being able to drink would be hard for me but I found it a lot easier than I thought I would have done. The hardest part is how accessible it is back home but realising the negative effects it has on your health, it is easy to prioritise and not make a purchase of poison.

I am certain people reading this will be preparing themselves for Stoptober this year. If you would like a helping hand with some great health products to get you moving forward on this journey.

I am releasing an incredible VIP Detox kit, for anyone serious about kickstarting a healthier lifestyle, this is for you:

Lowdown On Culture Shock

With my love for travelling and my various experiences, people always ask me how I cope with culture shock, venturing to exotic destinations and visiting exciting places with different ways of life.

I always find it really hard to answer people but before I go into my personal experiences, below is a few different things you can expect going from your home city to a new country or a rural community.

The difference in weather can and will be somewhat unbearable, the noise on the streets will be something different to what you are used to, expect dust in the air and then mix this with a language unknown to you & a complete difference in food. If you aren’t knowing what to expect, culture shock will get to you.

Culture shock – part of the experience

No matter where you are from, most travellers will gain some form of culture shock when arriving to a new destination different from their home country, especially in terms of culture, religion and language.

Whether this is light or severe is a different question but culture shock is part of the process and for some, experiencing this is all part of the reason to travel. Finding and looking for the things we cannot experience at home and learning to adapt to the new way of life is something most enjoy taking part in. This process usually lasts for a few days but can take a week for some.

Preparing for culture shock

A great way to manage culture shock is to take some time researching the destination you are visiting beforehand, prepare yourself for what is coming. Take some time to read up on your destination, learn about the etiquette for tipping, ordering food, asking for directions, religious & local cultural events and try to learn some local language.

Read online travel blogs and check to see if there is a checklist for things to take which will help you. Finding out other peoples recommendations is a great way to match your travelling experience and see the issues they have faced so you don’t have to. For my recommendations and some top tips for international travel; click here

Culture shock of return

This is always a hard one for me especially when spending 12 weeks in rural communities, I see how quickly we don’t need materialistic items and how having gadgets around us all the time is never going to make us happy.

With spending time in a rural community,  I realised how much ‘connected’ everyone is with each other, there’s a wider feeling of belonging & you are able to have some of the most honest conversations with people you will be able to have.

For those of you reading this who have never travelled outside your home country, I understand that the thought of travelling to a new location can seem quite daunting & the thought of leaving your home comforts can be scary but we are resilient and our ability to adapt to new surroundings is something that you haven’t quite realised yet.

Spending time in a hostel and meeting new people is a great way of making new friends and hearing a new perspective on life to what you are used to can be greatly refreshing.

Please share with your friends and family and start to plan your next travelling venture, Comment below and let me know where you would love to go to next

Thank you.

The Importance of Taking Ownership

So many times I hear people talking about taking ownership of our actions but I think for a lot of people, it’s hard to describe or begin to put these words into action. In any aspect of your life, the choice to take ownership, whether that be personal, career or work requires both responsibility and accountability.

“Ownership is not just about admitting when you’re wrong. It’s also about recognising what you’ve done right.” George Mason, Founder and President of Morse and Associates.

Learning not only when you have made a wrong choice and how to avoid taking the same steps is just as important as learning what you have done right and how to continue taking the same steps. Carry on reading if you are looking to find out how to take ownership of your actions and help those around you to do the same.

Learn to take initiative / Allow others to take initiative

If you are an employee, you will be more likely to approach your manager/team leader/supervisor when faced with a problem or issue. WHY? It’s simply to do with the perception you have of your supervisors being your problem solvers. Automatically it is the managers’ job to resolve every issue and make decisions.

It’s important to recognise this if you are in a managerial position that you need to refrain from being there at every beg and call your employees come to you with. Take some time out to empower them and give them the opportunity to take the initiative to face the issue themselves.

Setting an example
It doesn’t matter what aspect of your life you are looking to improve, a key way of taking ownership is to set an example and lead from the front. Encouraging other people to take responsibility by doing so yourself is going to move you forward exponentially.

Whether you are dealing with an unhappy customer or a difficult client and you have people who answer to you, the worst thing you can do is to take your frustration out on them. Take the blame and ensure you are being responsible and accountable for the poor performance. Anyone who looks up to you will see this and will be an excellent tool to show them how to take ownership for their own action as they will be more confident in taking the initiative and making mistakes. Remember, making mistakes and failing is an important step in becoming and being successful.

Focus on results

This one should be obvious but so many times I head out to shops, restuarants or even listening to people talk to eachother on the street, I hear people playing the blame game, analysing and spending effort focusing on the issues rather than taking positive action…

Instead of doing this and teaching other people to focus the negative, recognise a mistake has been made and help them learn how to solve and work toward absolving the problem at hand. Being results orientated is a sure way to ensure progress is being made.

Make sure you applaud the efforts of people around you

Once people are willing to embark on their own journeys towards resolving problems, you need to make it your priority to help them further realise all the answers to moving
forward is in their own hands and encouraging them to stay on the right track is going to provide them with confidence and positive traits needed to keep making it work.

I have recently read Who Moved My Cheese. If you haven’t read it, I definitely recommend doing so. It’s literally reached all corners of the world and the insight into your own life and the lessons you can gain from it is genuinely incredible.

I can almost guarantee that by reading this, you will understand the importance of changing your own views and by implementing the lessons in this book, you will see very easily how easy it is to applaud the efforts of people around you.

Helping others

Taking ownership of your actions more than often results in helping those around you. It’s very easy to take credit for a task that has been completed well but when you take the ownership for a task that hasn’t been done that well which someone else has done, the value that individual will receive from this is so powerful. Not only do they learn not to repeat the same mistake but like previously mentioned, they also learn to be more confident in their own ability.

In short, our lives are complex and very hectic, just by you being able to take ownership of your actions, you will find you have a positive impact of those around you as well as providing you with valuable insights to taking action in the right way and ensuring you are constantly moving forward.

The Fear Of Success

“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Henry Ford

Are you afraid of success? Is there something you want to pursue but feel you can’t?

In this article, we will have a look at what the fear of success is, how it can stop you from reaching your goals and more importantly what you can do to overcome this fear.

Being successful means different things to different people and this shouldn’t come as a shock. Whilst one person might think to reach the top position in their department is a success, another person might consider earning a certain figure from home is being successful. This difference between people is what makes this a much bigger issue and one that isn’t black and white like many believe.

There are a limitless number of differences between people and the perception of becoming successful is exactly the same.
With all the different views of success and the way different people perceive you is a huge obstacle for so many of us. Is there something that you want to pursue but you feel that you can’t. Maybe you feel that you are being stopped from moving forward?

Does this sound familiar? Could it be that you are afraid of succeeding? It’s more than possible.

Many people have and live inside their comfort zone and irrespective of their dreams and desires, keep themselves bound and shackled to it to avoid discomfort and failure.

Fear of failing is quite simply that; being scared to fail. Whilst fear of success is somewhat similar, it has a distinct difference being that they are so comfortable in their current situation that they want to continue to live the life despite actually hating it. Often, you may find the person is afraid of success out of a fear of how to handle the fame or wealth it brings.

What if we are judged for succeeding and reaching our goals and dreams? What if the success is short lived? Far too often we focus on the negative outcomes and put hypothetical obstacles in our way. What if there was no-one to judge you? What if you weren’t so harsh on yourself? Succeeding would become so much easier the moment you stop being your own worst enemy.

With all these what ifs and self-sabotaging thoughts, the easiest way to move past this fear is by strategising and forming a plan of action to take daily. A big part of getting to where you want is making tiny steps consistently. The time for you to get after your goals and dreams is now.

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is today”

If you have been putting your goals off because you are concerned about what will happen when you get there, stop, whatever happens, you will gain a wealth of knowledge from your experiences and learn valuable lessons to which you can take on with you later in life.

The following steps below will hopefully give you an action plan to take in order to get you on your right track.

  1. Positive Affirmations

Use positive affirmations daily. It might get overlooked but planting the seeds each morning is a great way to fire up your mentality and give it a boost in the right direction. For a list of great affirmations, you can start using right now, follow this link.

  2.  Take the time to find out your desires.

This might seem like an obvious suggestion but really taking the time to learn who you are, your goals but more importantly why is a huge step to moving forward. How can you expect to reach a target if it doesn’t line up with who you truly are? For more information on working what your ‘why’ is, follow this link.

  3. Get to terms with who you are and run with it.

So often, I hear people say “I’d love to go travel like you do” or “I really like what you are doing, but I’ll never be able to do it” The hardest thing for me doing this, is not doing it and trying to explain to people can be quite difficult… For the full story, click here.

  4. Choose your network wisely.

A huge part of moving forward and getting to where you want is picking who you spend your time with, if you have negative people in your life then chances are you will pick up their traits. Learn how to identify toxic people in your life and get rid of them by clicking here.

  5. Be prepared to leave people behind.

This is very similar to #4, but it’s focusing more broadly on you as an individual rather than the people around you. You need to separate yourself from the crowd and need to want to move forward.

Ever heard the crab mentality? A bunch of crabs stuck in a bucket and as soon as one tries to escape, the others pull it down in order to get that inch closer.

We all know people who are like this and more often than not, it’s those closest to us who are the worst for it, focus on the previous steps, create a laser like vision and work towards your goals. Being afraid of success is one thing which can easily disappear the moment you have created a plan and started to take action.

Breathe Easy.

Just let that sink in for a moment. 4,000,000 Deaths are blamed for Indoor Air Pollution.

We take 20,000 each day.

9,500 deaths per year in London due to air pollution.

I can’t be the only person who finds these facts scary? I mean, we spend 90% of our time indoors right… When we talk about clean air, it’s always what’s going on outside and the vehicles….

But, when we actually take a moment to think about what is happening indoors, the reality is 2x as bad.

Think of your house for just a moment, how many chemicals and pollutants are flying about in the air?

  • Cleaning agents
  • Mattresses
  • Fuels
  • Cooking
  • Beauty products
  • Viruses
  • Pets
  • Food
  • Candles
  • Microfibres

Short Term:

  • Eye, nose, & throat irritation
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Poor sleep
  • Reduced productivity
  • Cold & other viral symptoms

Long Term:

  • Lowered IQ
  • Respiratory disease
  • Asthma
  • Heart disease
  • Liver damage
  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Death

“This is pretty scary, with all this indoor pollution, is there any escape from it?”

Forunately, you can feel confident knowing that you’re breathing clean, safe air with Puritii.
Removing up to 99.99% of pollutants from the air inside your home, which according to the World Health Organization is more polluted than the air outside.

Puritii removes all three pollutant categories with up to 99.99% efficiency, including:

Particulates down to .3 microns: including pollen, dust and dust mite residue, pet dander, etc.

Carbohydrates And Weight Loss.

I recently had a conversation about fats and carbohydrates and how they are responsible for health-related issues. Everyone talks about fats and how they are bad for you but let me explain that sometimes they can be used for your benefit.

The Truth About Fats.

The truth is quite simple. Fats do not make you fat…

“Erm, what?”

It’s true, fats don’t make you fat, in fact, it’s actually carbohydrates that help you load the pounds on. You are probably wondering how?
Eating carbohydrates causes high blood sugar and secretion of insulin, which as we know, gives a short burst of energy instantly followed by a “low” or a “slump” which often causes a slump in your mood too (which is your blood sugar levels dropping).

Low blood sugar is a huge reason that people over eat and have cravings.

carbohydrates can, of course, be burnt off with exercise but with our hectic lifestyles, many of us don’t get the exercise we need to get rid of the excess carbs.

We talk about the different types of carbs but let’s be honest, there are only two different types: Good Carbs & Bad Carbs (those you burn & those you don’t).

Welcome to the Carbohydrate addiction cycle.

The “CAC” is as powerful an addiction as any illegal substance. The only way of cutting this addiction is like any other.
You need to go cold turkey. The remarkable thing about this then is losing your fuel source by dodging the carbs.
If you aren’t receiving the fuel from carbohydrates then it’s got to come from somewhere else, and where does it come from? Your fat reserve. It’s these fats which will help break the cycle supporting you in your weight loss goal.

How does this work?

Omega 3’s in particular turn on the fat burning mechanism in the body and turn off the fat production mechanism so make sure you turn to a good source of Omega Oils. Good Omega oils also increase thermogenesis (body heat) which means you burn fat off as heat too!

In addition, fats keep you feeling fuller for longer and sustain energy levels without peaks and troughs so remove the cravings that make regular dieting so difficult.

The Signs Of Dehydration.

So I’m currently in Bangladesh around my 1/2 way point with VSO & ICS and I was thinking about how much water I had been consuming since arriving and it significantly helped me with the idea of writing this post.

If the weather where you are is approaching Summer then this is really important for you to take in, although you can become dehydrated anytime of the year, there’s a higher risk of it during the Summer days.

Here are a few things to look out for:

Dry skin.

Some of the earliest indicators of dehydration present themselves on your skin. If there’s not enough water in your body, you stop sweating. When you don’t sweat, your skin
begins to dry, so use this to your advantage and grab some more water.

Dry eyes.

Your eyes will start to dry out. Severe dehydration can also impede your ability to produce tears, which leads to dry, red, burning eyes.

Joint pain.

Materials such as cartilage and ligaments are roughly 88% liquid, and water helps naturally lubricate joints to keep you moving effortlessly and pain-free, your joints can become painful with movement.

Fatigued and lethargic.

Your body will start to slow down in order to conserve resources. Water acts as your body’s fuel, and when you’re starting to run low, you will experience sleepiness and fatigue.

Decreased urine output.

The average person should be visiting the restroom 4-7 times a day minimally. Also, urine color is a good indicator; the darker it is, the more dehydrated you are.

This can indicate inadequate water consumption, particularly when combined with one or more of the other symptoms of dehydration.

Most people don’t realize that hunger pain can actually signal a need for water, not just food. Your body will try to tell you when it needs more water, sometimes by increasing your hunger. Try sipping water before reaching for a snack.

Lackluster workouts.

The workout sessions that seem to drag on, the yoga poses that are suddenly impossible, the weights you can’t lift even though you just did the week before. Your body, including every muscle, tendon, ligament, and blood cell, run off of water. You can’t operate at maximum capacity without it and your exercise regimen will suffer because of it.

If you liked reading this and found it helpful, make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss a future post, additionally, please consider sharing with your loved ones so they better understand the importance of staying hydrated.
