Lowdown On Culture Shock

With my love for travelling and my various experiences, people always ask me how I cope with culture shock, venturing to exotic destinations and visiting exciting places with different ways of life.

I always find it really hard to answer people but before I go into my personal experiences, below is a few different things you can expect going from your home city to a new country or a rural community.

The difference in weather can and will be somewhat unbearable, the noise on the streets will be something different to what you are used to, expect dust in the air and then mix this with a language unknown to you & a complete difference in food. If you aren’t knowing what to expect, culture shock will get to you.

Culture shock – part of the experience

No matter where you are from, most travellers will gain some form of culture shock when arriving to a new destination different from their home country, especially in terms of culture, religion and language.

Whether this is light or severe is a different question but culture shock is part of the process and for some, experiencing this is all part of the reason to travel. Finding and looking for the things we cannot experience at home and learning to adapt to the new way of life is something most enjoy taking part in. This process usually lasts for a few days but can take a week for some.

 

Preparing for culture shock

A great way to manage culture shock is to take some time researching the destination you are visiting beforehand, prepare yourself for what is coming. Take some time to read up on your destination, learn about the etiquette for tipping, ordering food, asking for directions, religious & local cultural events and try to learn some local language.

Read online travel blogs and check to see if there is a checklist for things to take which will help you. Culture shock of return

This is always a hard one for me especially when spending 12 weeks in rural communities, I see how quickly we don’t need materialistic items and how having gadgets around us all the time is never going to make us happy.

With spending time in a rural community,  I realised how much ‘connected’ everyone is with each other, there’s a wider feeling of belonging & you are able to have some of the most honest conversations with people you will be able to have.

For those of you reading this who have never travelled outside your home country, I understand that the thought of travelling to a new location can seem quite daunting & the thought of leaving your home comforts can be scary but we are resilient and our ability to adapt to new surroundings is something that you haven’t quite realised yet.

Spending time in a hostel and meeting new people is a great way of making new friends and hearing a new perspective on life to what you are used to can be greatly refreshing.

The Importance of Taking Ownership

So many times I hear people talking about taking ownership of our actions but I think for a lot of people, it’s hard to describe or begin to put these words into action. In any aspect of your life, the choice to take ownership, whether that be personal, career or work requires both responsibility and accountability.

“Ownership is not just about admitting when you’re wrong. It’s also about recognising what you’ve done right.” George Mason, Founder and President of Morse and Associates.

Learning not only when you have made a wrong choice and how to avoid taking the same steps is just as important as learning what you have done right and how to continue taking the same steps. Carry on reading if you are looking to find out how to take ownership of your actions and help those around you to do the same.


Learn to take initiative / Allow others to take initiative

If you are an employee, you will be more likely to approach your manager/team leader/supervisor when faced with a problem or issue. WHY? It’s simply to do with the perception you have of your supervisors being your problem solvers. Automatically it is the managers’ job to resolve every issue and make decisions.

 

It’s important to recognise this if you are in a managerial position that you need to refrain from being there at every beg and call your employees come to you with. Take some time out to empower them and give them the opportunity to take the initiative to face the issue themselves.

Setting an example
It doesn’t matter what aspect of your life you are looking to improve, a key way of taking ownership is to set an example and lead from the front. Encouraging other people to take responsibility by doing so yourself is going to move you forward exponentially.

Whether you are dealing with an unhappy customer or a difficult client and you have people who answer to you, the worst thing you can do is to take your frustration out on them. Take the blame and ensure you are being responsible and accountable for the poor performance. Anyone who looks up to you will see this and will be an excellent tool to show them how to take ownership for their own action as they will be more confident in taking the initiative and making mistakes. Remember, making mistakes and failing is an important step in becoming and being successful.

Focus on results

This one should be obvious but so many times I head out to shops, restuarants or even listening to people talk to eachother on the street, I hear people playing the blame game, analysing and spending effort focusing on the issues rather than taking positive action…

Instead of doing this and teaching other people to focus the negative, recognise a mistake has been made and help them learn how to solve and work toward absolving the problem at hand. Being results orientated is a sure way to ensure progress is being made.

Make sure you applaud the efforts of people around you

Once people are willing to embark on their own journeys towards resolving problems, you need to make it your priority to help them further realise all the answers to moving
forward is in their own hands and encouraging them to stay on the right track is going to provide them with confidence and positive traits needed to keep making it work.

I have recently read Who Moved My Cheese. If you haven’t read it, I definitely recommend doing so. It’s literally reached all corners of the world and the insight into your own life and the lessons you can gain from it is genuinely incredible.

I can almost guarantee that by reading this, you will understand the importance of changing your own views and by implementing the lessons in this book, you will see very easily how easy it is to applaud the efforts of people around you.

 

Helping others

Taking ownership of your actions more than often results in helping those around you. It’s very easy to take credit for a task that has been completed well but when you take the ownership for a task that hasn’t been done that well which someone else has done, the value that individual will receive from this is so powerful. Not only do they learn not to repeat the same mistake but like previously mentioned, they also learn to be more confident in their own ability.

In short, our lives are complex and very hectic, just by you being able to take ownership of your actions, you will find you have a positive impact of those around you as well as providing you with valuable insights to taking action in the right way and ensuring you are constantly moving forward.


 

The Fear Of Success

Are you afraid of success? Is there something you want to pursue but feel you can’t?

In this article, we will have a look at what the fear of success is, how it can stop you from reaching your goals and more importantly what you can do to overcome this fear.

Being successful means different things to different people and this shouldn’t come as a shock. Whilst one person might think to reach the top position in their department is a success, another person might consider earning a certain figure from home is being successful. This difference between people is what makes this a much bigger issue and one that isn’t black and white like many believe.

There are a limitless number of differences between people and the perception of becoming successful is exactly the same.
With all the different views of success and the way different people perceive you is a huge obstacle for so many of us. Is there something that you want to pursue but you feel that you can’t. Maybe you feel that you are being stopped from moving forward?

Does this sound familiar? Could it be that you are afraid of succeeding? It’s more than possible.

Many people have and live inside their comfort zone and irrespective of their dreams and desires, keep themselves bound and shackled to it to avoid discomfort and failure.

Fear of failing is quite simply that; being scared to fail. Whilst fear of success is somewhat similar, it has a distinct difference being that they are so comfortable in their current situation that they want to continue to live the life despite actually hating it. Often, you may find the person is afraid of success out of a fear of how to handle the fame or wealth it brings.

What if we are judged for succeeding and reaching our goals and dreams? What if the success is short lived? Far too often we focus on the negative outcomes and put hypothetical obstacles in our way. What if there was no-one to judge you? What if you weren’t so harsh on yourself? Succeeding would become so much easier the moment you stop being your own worst enemy. 

With all these what ifs and self-sabotaging thoughts, the easiest way to move past this fear is by strategising and forming a plan of action to take daily. A big part of getting to where you want is making tiny steps consistently. The time for you to get after your goals and dreams is now.

If you have been putting your goals off because you are concerned about what will happen when you get there, stop, whatever happens, you will gain a wealth of knowledge from your experiences and learn valuable lessons to which you can take on with you later in life.

The following steps below will hopefully give you an action plan to take in order to get you on your right track.

  1. Positive Affirmations

    Use positive affirmations daily. It might get overlooked but planting the seeds each morning is a great way to fire up your mentality and give it a boost in the right direction. For a list of great affirmations, you can start using right now, follow this link.

  2.  Take the time to find out your desires. 

    This might seem like an obvious suggestion but really taking the time to learn who you are, your goals but more importantly why is a huge step to moving forward.   3. Get to terms with who you are and run with it.

  4. Choose your network wisely.

    A huge part of moving forward and getting to where you want is picking who you spend your time with, if you have negative people in your life then chances are you will pick up their traits. Learn how to identify toxic people in your life and get rid of them by clicking here.

  5. Be prepared to leave people behind.

    This is very similar to #4, but it’s focusing more broadly on you as an individual rather than the people around you. You need to separate yourself from the crowd and need to want to move forward.

    Ever heard the crab mentality? A bunch of crabs stuck in a bucket and as soon as one tries to escape, the others pull it down in order to get that inch closer.

    We all know people who are like this and more often than not, it’s those closest to us who are the worst for it, focus on the previous steps, create a laser like vision and work towards your goals. Being afraid of success is one thing which can easily disappear the moment you have created a plan and started to take action.

2 Sides To The Same Coin.


From an early age, I found it hard to really express how I feel to people, this grew more as I got older especially when my views on life are so different to the way people perceive what is the norm.
I speak to people and they fit into one of two brackets & I’m sure you will have one feeling about all of this or the other.
Either you feel very distant and somewhat alienated which is totally fine & I suppose I felt like this until I stepped over the line or you are greatly inspired by my writing and it’s helping you to take a leap of faith with your own life and travel a journey you once thought impossible.

Whichever way you feel, I want you to understand this is perfectly okay, you might be rushed with different emotions in both cases which is okay, either way, I’m hoping you can find some value through this post & my website as a whole.

So although the title of this blog is globaltraveladventures, I’m sure you’ve noticed I’m not solely speaking about travelling but rather my life and experiences with some of my travels mixed in and tips and advice on health and wellness.

I guess for me, the first moment I realised that there was a big part of me that liked the idea of travelling was when I was posted to Cyprus with the Army back in 2013. I quickly realised a language which everyone speaks which is smiling and happiness.

I soon found that people no matter where they were from (You do get the exception) will reciprocate your friendliness. I met a lot of new people, who I still speak to today from Cyprus as well as the Falklands. I’m currently looking into travelling to Chile to catch up with some of the workers who I became close with in the Falkland islands.  I also found I had a greater respect for nature and animals than originally thought.

I worked out that there was more to life than what I was doing and it’s where I really started to look at life in a different way. My life was void of any spiritual aspect and the army only perpetuated that.

I became so much more interested in the philosophical aspects of life and it really led me to a new way of thinking which really disorientated me with regards to everything I thought I once knew.

With my new views on life, I was fully prepared for my 12 weeks in Uganda. Not entirely sure what to expect but willing to learn, help other people and experience a new culture, a different way of life and although I didn’t realise this at the time, find a new purpose to this crazy thing called life.

 

 

I was always taught from the world around me and society that we need to get a job and earn money in order to live a good life. In the 12 weeks I spent in Uganda, my whole preconceived idea of happiness, purpose and living a good life went out the window. These children taught me more about life than anything else ever has.

People spoke to me about the culture shock and the difficulties of transferring myself into an environment like rural Uganda but the only difficulty I found was the return back to the UK, the separation from the world, the unwillingness to be open and have a conversation with others.

I found it difficult and I guess, I still do, everyone is so focused on the distractions of life (Social media, TV, games etc) that we miss the point of it, to connect and love.

I cannot trust in the fact that we were put on this planet to sit in an office to earn money for a corporation we have no interest in & I’m certain the more you think about it, the more you start to agree.

“But, it’s easy for you, you just go and travel, I mean, you don’t have any responsibilities”

I can promise getting a job at a local office would have been the easiest thing for me to do whereas the hardest part would have been lying to myself about how “happy” I would have been.

The path to seeking out your goals isn’t an easy one, you’ll have constant doubts, friends and family who put you down and try to keep you down, insecurities and most of society judging you and telling you how to live your life.

The truth about it is if they were as bothered at chasing their own dreams as they were keeping you from reaching yours, they wouldn’t have time to judge you.

There’s going to be times when you want to give up and throw in the towel. There’s going to be times where you fall down, and the fall can be a huge one.

I know from experience that you will always manage to get back up on your feet and carry on fighting through it all.

You might feel like you are in deep water and struggling to stay afloat, you might even consider giving up the fight and going under.

Stop looking at the issues, think solutions and get back on your grind to success.

Lastly, say no to peer pressure, no to what and who society tell you to be and start living life for yourself. You have so much potential to do whatever you want so the question I ask you is:

Living life on your own terms.

So often, I hear people say “I’d love to go travel like you do” or “I really like what you are doing, but I’ll never be able to do it” The hardest thing for me doing this, is not doing it and trying to explain to people can be quite difficult…

I used to feel bad for the individuals I was talking to but then I remembered when I was in the same situation and how much I was making excuses for myself, not taking full responsibility for anything and allowing other people to run my life for me.

You see, people in this predicament are always focusing on the negative aspects of their life or the lack of things they have such as time and money.
I’m a firm believer in the law of attraction and if you make your bed then you have to lay in it.

People tell me they hate their jobs but then aren’t doing anything to change their situation, the lack of money or time or the crappy job isn’t the issue.
If you have a willingness to change, you will find yourself working towards your goals.
I’m not saying it’s going to be easy or fun at all times, you will get stressed, you’ll burn out, you’ll want to fall prey to the activity you don’t want to do but if you want something so badly, you will keep stepping towards it, regardless of the challenge ahead.

 

What Can You Do To Change Your Life?

Luckily for you, there are simple steps that you can make to change your life.

 

 

1. Obtain The Best Information.

In whichever field you are in, refuse to get the best information possible. Once you have it, spend your time and focus on learning it. It’s a crucial difference between finding information and finding the best information.

Which would your prefer to work with?

 

2. Find The Best People In Your Field To Use As Role Models.

Look for the best people in your field and follow their journey from the beginning, what were their work patterns like when they first started? How long did it take them to get where they are now? It didn’t happen over time but the difference between them and so many other people is their determination to keep driving it forward. Adopt a mindset of success and learn what works for you and what doesn’t.

 

 

3. Spend Time Looking At Your Current Beliefs.

What are your current beliefs? Are they supporting you? Or do you have self-limiting beliefs? You need to spend time on your personal obstacles and turn them around, when you understand what a self-limiting belief is, you can start to develop yourself as a person to combat these. 4. Shape Your Mindset With Goals.

Carbohydrates And Weight Loss.

I recently had a conversation about fats and carbohydrates and how they are responsible for health-related issues. Everyone talks about fats and how they are bad for you but let me explain that sometimes they can be used for your benefit.

The Truth About Fats.

The truth is quite simple. Fats do not make you fat…

“Erm, what?”

It’s true, fats don’t make you fat, in fact, it’s actually carbohydrates that help you load the pounds on. You are probably wondering how?
Eating carbohydrates causes high blood sugar and secretion of insulin, which as we know, gives a short burst of energy instantly followed by a “low” or a “slump” which often causes a slump in your mood too (which is your blood sugar levels dropping).

Low blood sugar is a huge reason that people over eat and have cravings.

 
carbohydrates can, of course, be burnt off with exercise but with our hectic lifestyles, many of us don’t get the exercise we need to get rid of the excess carbs.

What makes a person magnetic or irresistible?

Do you find there’s always that one person who always has a flair of good luck about them?
I’m sure you are fully aware of who I mean, that one girl who everyone thinks is drop-dead beautiful but still manages to get whatever from whoever she wants? (Before we all start kicking off, let me explain myself).

There’s a lot more to the outer beauty of these people & that what magnetises others to them. When they walk into a building, the whole room lights up.
They accomplish just about anything they desire purely because of their charisma and attitude…Or sometimes, it’s even as simple as showing kindness.

Their whole persona just beams out confidence, joy and compassion. You know there’s something completely different but you can’t quite work out why…

People who are likable are conscious of the way they treat others. They realise that arrogance kills likeability more than anything People who are irresistible don’t act like they are better than you.

Irresistible people don’t act as if they are better than you. They actually believe that you have the ability to succeed and create the life that you want. But, what’s the secret to truly being this type of person?


HERE ARE 15 THINGS IRRESISTIBLE PEOPLE DO DIFFERENTLY:

 

1. They Treat Everyone With Dignity And Respect.

They have no need to put other people down. Their ability to treat everyone the same is incredible. They will treat a homeless person the exact way they would a CEO of a huge company which is what makes them so likeable. There is simply no status that is able to separate individuals from each other. They understand that we are all part of the human race.

2. Gossiping Is A Big No…

A person who is charismatic has no need to gossip about people as a means to take part in conversations. They have more important things to be doing and always endeavour to bring the best of themselves to the table, helping other people to shine. They are so focused on uplifting others, their energy is what attracts people to them. Gossiping is hugely a negative trait. Charismatic & irresistible people have no time for it.

3. Treat Others How You Expect To Be Treated Is One Of Their Mottos.

“But that rule is flawed because it assumes that everyone wants to be treated the same way. In reality, people have different desires and goals.”

A person who is irresistible understands this perfectly, it’s their number one rule: Simply treat others they way they wish to be treated.

4. They Understand Boundaries.

People who are irresistible don’t need to please people all the time. They understand and know fully that there’s a place and a time for everything. Their ways of giving to and assisting others are healthy, they don’t drain themselves of energy to do so, they are able to find the balance between helping people and looking after themselves.

 

5. They Are Genuine People.

They don’t need to pretend to be someone they are not. You see what you get with them. Their self-confidence is bursting at the seams, whilst they might not have super-model looks, he or she can and will walk into any room with their confidence where they just have a glow about them. They understand their self-worth and they are not willing to allow others to dictate how they should be seeing themselves.

6. They Have Integrity.

Albert Einstein said:

“Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.”

Those who hold integrity hold it in their authenticity, not just that but they truly know what matters and they pass this on to other people around them. You will be made to question your principles, honesty and goodness.

One of the best lessons they can share with you: Integrity.

7. They Smile… Often.

One of the most powerful qualities a person has who is irresistible has is the ability to always smile, regardless of what is going on around them. Their energy is capable of bringing laughter to people. They know that helping people to smile is the solution to a lot of issues and is a great way of shutting out negativity.negativity.

8. They Show Compassion.

These people are very capable of showing empathy. They are very compassionate to animals, people and of course, nature. They get the fact that whilst you may be on top of the world one minute, you could find yourself struggling the next. It’s not just showing and being kind to those around you who you like but it’s also leaving the comfort zone, stepping into new places. They dare to take chances with people because they know it’s worth it.

 

9. They Love Life.

They are not exempt from emotional drama, challenges or facing obstacles, chances are they feel these and come across these the most, but they have a great understanding that life is an opportunity and it’s the only thing that is real. They understand it’s for taking chances, loving people and helping those around them. When they meet someone new, they will try to make the individual feel good about themselves & they cherish every moment in life.

 

10. They Bring People Together.

They just have an ability to bring like-minded people together, they connect people to each other and love to help other people succeed. Chances of finding yourself in someone’s enchantment, you will find yourself instantly connected on a deep level. You might refer to them as a teacher or a coach who can help you reach your next level.

 

 

11. They Love People.

The person who people class as irresistible is the one who is known as a “people person.”
They enjoy social situations, add to the energy and love stories and being around people. They have a great ability to attract others who are ready to smash their own goals.

 

 

12. They Know You Must Work Hard To Get Ahead.

These people probably always wear a smile and are able to have a laugh but they realise that without hard work and a bit of struggle you don’t get very far. Their work ethic and will to succeed is what keeps them focused on accomplishing their dreams. Their success happens because they refuse to give up.
Let’s be honest, the only time anyone really loses is when they give up.

13. They Listen.

“People like to know you’re listening, and something as simple as a clarification question shows not only that you are listening but that you also care about what they’re saying. You’ll be surprised how much respect and appreciation you gain just by asking good questions.”

The irresistible person has this innate ability to stare into your spirit and truly make you feel as if you are understood, acknowledged and loved.

14. Positive Attitudes.

Despite the obstacles and challenges, these people always keep a positive attitude. They despise feeding into negative emotions, very rarely entertain the self-pity act from anyone, tend to avoid arguments and quite often search for an optimistic approach to the burdens of life.

15. They Always Use Their Manners.

The ability to show gratitude is a magic wand for the irresistible person.
They recognise compliments go a long way in life. What really makes others like you are simple manners: Please and Thank you. These are taught to us from an early age, are never misused and are very powerful in making people feel accepted.

The Signs Of Dehydration.

So I’m currently in Bangladesh around my 1/2 way point with VSO & ICS and I was thinking about how much water I had been consuming since arriving and it significantly helped me with the idea of writing this post.

If the weather where you are is approaching Summer then this is really important for you to take in, although you can become dehydrated anytime of the year, there’s a higher risk of it during the Summer days.

 

Here are a few things to look out for:

Dry skin.

Some of the earliest indicators of dehydration present themselves on your skin. If there’s not enough water in your body, you stop sweating. When you don’t sweat, your skin
begins to dry, so use this to your advantage and grab some more water.

Dry eyes.

Your eyes will start to dry out. Severe dehydration can also impede your ability to produce tears, which leads to dry, red, burning eyes.

Joint pain.

Materials such as cartilage and ligaments are roughly 88% liquid, and water helps naturally lubricate joints to keep you moving effortlessly and pain-free, your joints can become painful with movement.

Fatigued and lethargic.

Your body will start to slow down in order to conserve resources. Water acts as your body’s fuel, and when you’re starting to run low, you will experience sleepiness and fatigue.

Decreased urine output.

The average person should be visiting the restroom 4-7 times a day minimally. Also, urine color is a good indicator; the darker it is, the more dehydrated you are.

Headaches.

This can indicate inadequate water consumption, particularly when combined with one or more of the other symptoms of dehydration.

Hunger.

Most people don’t realize that hunger pain can actually signal a need for water, not just food. Your body will try to tell you when it needs more water, sometimes by increasing your hunger. Try sipping water before reaching for a snack.

 

 

Lackluster workouts.

The workout sessions that seem to drag on, the yoga poses that are suddenly impossible, the weights you can’t lift even though you just did the week before. Your body, including every muscle, tendon, ligament, and blood cell, run off of water. You can’t operate at maximum capacity without it and your exercise regimen will suffer because of it.

Supplements?

So you’ve started your fitness programme and it’s been a few weeks when the inevitable conversation comes up about supplements and you are faced with an awkward question.

Have you thought about taking supplements?”

If you haven’t before, then by this point, you will almost certainly be thinking about it, so the person you are speaking to advises you where to go and what to look for.
You go to your local shop and browse all the different products on offer, so many price slashes and deals you just don’t know which one to pick.
The one suggested isn’t on the shelf and the staff member you ask for help promotes the “best seller” to you as per his or her training.

Balanced Diet & Nutrition In Food.

It’s a well-known fact that eating a balanced diet is crucial to keeping your fitness game strong along with taking your required nutrients, but are you aware that the nutritional value has dropped in food significantly over the years in comparison to what it used to be?

 

Do Your Research.

I suggest that you spend a considerable amount of time looking in-depth at all products you are thinking about purchasing. You need to remember, this isn’t a new toy you are purchasing, supplements are effectively improving your health, your performance and stimulation. They are absorbed into your system so you seriously need to be thinking about it.

Ask yourself: Is it better just because it’s cheaper?  I highly doubt it. 95% of the time, there’s a reason the cheaper products are cheaper.

“I’m saving money by purchasing these at £10 as opposed to a different brand” Sorry to break it to you, but it’s rare you are saving money. In fact, you are losing money. These supplements aren’t effective as they need to be, are often poorly manufactured and have a very small amount of nutrients that they are being sold for.

Before purchasing any supplement, you need to be asking yourself:

Do the supplements I am about to purchase have any certification?
Are they accredited with rigorous testing practices?
Who are the supplements backed by?

These are vital questions you should be asking yourself, remember that there is no substitute for your health and you can’t put a price on it.
