Toxic People and how to deal with them.

I think a huge part of improving your lifestyle is being able to recognise the toxic people in your life and being able to deal with them in a way that can help you move forward.

I’m sure most of you all know how hard of a challenge it can be to survive and deal with people’s mood, their ups and downs and trying to figure out where you are are in the picture. Before we start deleting numbers and ‘outing’ from our lives, consider the fact they may be ill, seriously stress or lacking emotional needs. These people really need to be supported and cared for. You still need to protect yourself from this though, see Is your energy safe?

We are talking about a different type of moodiness, a different type of negative behaviour. There’s always that one person who will use his or her mood swings to manipulate you and their situation, these people are toxic bullies who want to inflict abuse and misery onto the people around them. All their relationships & friendships are based on how much they can use other people to meet their own selfish needs. I’m certain all of you have observed people who have a similar lifestyle.

Everyone of us will fall victim to this at one point in our lives, so how can we avoid the kickback from an individuals toxicity?

1.  Ditch them.

Get rid of them. Anyone who insists on dictating their emotions into the atmosphere in a destructive way, they are toxic. If because of their attitude and regardless of you compassion, advice or patience isn’t helping them, you are suffering, you need to be asking yourself, “Do I really need OR want this person around me in my life?”

Getting rid of toxic people from your life makes it a lot easier to breate. Leave these people behind & move on when the situation warrants it. This means that you care about your own well-being, there’s nothing selfish about that and it doesn’t mean you wish ill of them.

Any relationship, whether that be a friendship, relationship, marriage or even a work colleague should contain a give and take policy. It should be reciprocal and mutual. If you can’t get rid of them for whatever reason then read the following points, they should hopefully help you out.

2.  Their toxic behaviour is NOT okay.

Long-term pain is not worth the short-term relief, people who are toxic do not change if they get rewarded for not changing. Why would they? From this moment, don’t allow yourself to be influenced by them or their behaviour. Stop making special excuses for their continued behaviour.

It’s not worth putting up with the drama or continuous negativity. Is someone 21+ isn’t capable of being reasonable or reliable then you need to let them know, leading us onto #3.

3.  Speak up!

For their own gain, some people will happily do anything at the expense of other people, whether that be taking money and/or property, passing guilt or blame etc. Stop allowing this type of behaviour.  When confronted, most people will know they are doing the wrong thing will back down. You’ll be surprised at how quick as well. People tend to stay quiet in most social situations so just speak up.

People with toxic behaviour could try to use anger as a means to influence you. They may ignore you when you try to get in touch or speak to them, they might interrupt you to start talking about something that you find sensitive. If you decide to speak up and respond, they could be shocked, ‘upset’ or angry because you’ve trodden out of your box but it’s important to speak up regardless.

A big reason once can get sucked into toxic mind games is not mentioning it to the person. Challenging the type of behaviour can sometimes bring the negative impact of their behaviour into the light for them to realise.

Here are some ideas you could try to bring it out of them:

“Is something upsetting you? You seem angry”

“Would you like to talk about something else? I feel I am boring you, is this not important?”

“I don’t know if you are aware but your attitude is upsetting me right now. Is that what you want?”

It can be alarming to someone if they do use their mood as a means of manipulation, direct statements are great to open up an opportunity where you can try and help them if they are facing a genuine issue.

Alternatively, they could try to deny it with the “What do you mean?” but at least you have tried and make them aware of their attitude.

If they still persist and deny the fact then it is probably time to #4.

4.  Stand up for yourself.

Your dignity can never be attacked unless you allow it to be. This is just about finding that strength inside of you to stand up for your boundaries.

People who are really toxic will endeavour to pollute everyone and everything that surrounds them, this will not stop you unless you are prepared to do something about it. Demonstrate you aren’t willing to be at their disposal, end any conversations with either over the top niceness OR be completely abrupt with them and walk away.
You want to get the message across that the reward for games has disappeared and will not be played at your expense. Vacate from them and ignore them until they change their ways.

5.  Their behaviour is not to be taken personally.

You need to know that this has nothing to do ith you. It’s all on them.

People who are toxic will most likely try their best to make you feel like you are the reason for their outburst. The fact that we are all prone to feeling guilty at even the slightest of accusation doesn’t help, this can massively damage our resolve and knock our confidence back.

When you take nothing personally, there is a huge freedom to be found. Toxic people behave the same way as they to you as everyone around you and the people you don’t know around them. IF you feel directly involved and personally attacked, you need to realise the fact this is what they want & it really has absolutely nothing to do with you.

It’s all based on their own reflection, everything from what they say and how they say it to what they do to you, other people and how they do it.

6.  Practicing compassion at a practical level

If you know a toxic person who is going through a difficult time or suffering from an illness, it might make sense to be sympathetic with them. You still need to disengage with the fact that they are being so for a reason. It makes no sense to allow yourself to be the subject of someone’s game because they aren’t feeling too well, when they get better, they understand that it’s okay for them to treat you a certain way and it gets far too tempting for them to use their situations to get at you.

7.  Me time.

We are all forced to work with someone we don’t particularly get on with, but when the person is genuinely toxic, it’s very important to get some rest, relaxation time and get yourself out of there. With all our distractions, work can be a hard place to focus as it is, never mind when you are having to do so in front of someone who has a toxic attitude around you. It will wear you down. Even if people do have a genuine illness, they still understand other people around them have needs so excusing yourself politely won’t cause any issues.

Your time away is deserved, especially under this environment, being able to think free from the toxic attitude and outside issues is your right. If the situation isn’t making time or working for you, then make time for yourself and step out of there.
You deserve this time away.

Your turn.

I’m certain there are a lot of different ideas you guys can think about as well that can help deal with toxic people. I would love to hear what you all think so if you do have any suggestions, please feel free to comment below.

Is your energy safe?

This is going to be a bit different to my usual blog posts and slightly shorter but I’m hoping you’ll find it thought provoking.

Don’t you just mean safety?

We talk about safety a great deal when it comes down to the physical stuff. “Don’t put your hand in a fire, you’ll burn yourself and it will hurt”

“Don’t climb that, you’ll fall and hurt yourself”

From an early age, we have these messages placed into our heads and whilst there’s no conversation to be had in regards to the warnings we are offered, it creates a fear which you never know the reason behind, merely noting the fact that you are in fact scared of something.

Most of this stems from childhood and if you do have fears, there is of course a few examples of personal reasons you are genuinely scared but a large percentage of the time, it is more to do with what you’ve heard from people as you’ve been growing up.

What do I mean by energy safety?

Have you ever been having a conversation with someone you know & they vent for hours and talk to you about all their dramas, they leave feeling much better & you feel completely drained, unwilling to speak to anyone or do anything? Chances are you’ve all felt this & it’s exactly what I’m speaking about.

Regardless of what you believe, there are situations and conversations you’ll have faced which have completely taken it all out of you & while you might have a different explanation for it, such as the ‘person you speaking to is just negative’ or ‘There was such a bad vibe in that room’. You are picking up the negative energy and you aren’t really sure on how to deal with it, but you know it’s there.

So you are understanding what I’m talking about now even if you have a different word for it or a phrase, either way, it’s a bad feeling and you don’t like it. It’s gets dark when you think that’s a single person who has that ability to make you feel that drained and low, now imagine that power on a global scale.

What am I trying to get at?

Can you remember the last time there was genuinely a good news story broadcast on your morning news programme? OR was it all latest stories inducing hate, fear and division amongst people?

Believe it or not, despite what the media would have you believe, there are more good people sharing this planet with you than there are bad.

Beautiful To Live By Quotes | Quote Addicts

Why is it the media are so focused on portraying the worst in and placing us in a state of fear and emotional distress? Why is the media constantly trying to keep us in a negative state?

“Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

I’m not trying to tell people what to do or what not to do but merely to be observant of everything around you. When watching the news in the morning. Ask yourself if it’s a story that is empowering you and making you feel good as opposed to a story that is upsetting you and making you feel low.

Everything around us has a field that we are constantly tuning into. It is said we are an average of the 5 people we spend most of our time with & it comes back down to this. If you have people who are always low and complaining spending all their time with you, chances are you will reciporicate this.

Be vigilant, observe the media and the people around you & if you notice it isn’t lifting you up, then leave it behind. The only people who benefit from you being in a state of negativity are the ones who tried to put you there in the first place, (whoever that may be).

Top Tips For International Travel

Okay, so if it’s your first time travelling or maybe you are a seasoned traveller but with all the excitement you’ve forgotten something. Worry not, below you will find a list of some great tips to check on before your trip.

Security & Health

1. Vaccinations & insurance!
It’s #1 for a strong reason. Ensure you have all the required vaccinations & any prescriptions you may require. Some airports require proof of vaccinations and won’t allow you into the country unless you can prove you’ve been vaccinated. (Ask your GP or travel clinic for a vaccination card). Make sure your insurance policy provider applies for overseas emergencies.

2. Photocopy your important documents.
How would you feel if your passport was stolen or you lost it? You’ll want to make sure you can prove your citizenship. Photocopies are a must!

3. Leave a copy of your passport at home.
Leaving a copy of your documents at home with someone you trust for extra backup. (Just in case you need it).

4. Register with your embassy.
This will make it easier for your government to get you to safety and into contact with you should there be an issue in country.

5. Water.
Make sure you are aware of the water situation in the area you are heading out to. Is it safe to drink tap water? Are you going to be purchasing bottles every day? Consider taking out all the risks by taking a water filtration unit with you in your luggage. For information on water filters, make sure you check out this link.

Money

6. Research your conversion rates before leaving.
It can be a nasty surprise finding out you have £20 left out of £200 because you’ve spent more money on the conversion than you budgeted for. Do your maths before you travel and try to get a sense of what the conversion rate is.

7. Go to a bank or ATM in the country you’re visiting.
Trying to convert your cash in the airport and around the city can sometimes be a great rip-off for you. Find a local bank and the conversion will be a better rate for you.

8. Local cash is a must.
Not every place you visit will accept Chip & Pin or plastic, especially not on public transport.

9. Contact your bank or card provider.
I’ve been caught with this once and it’s a nightmare to get sorted. Contact your bank before leaving and alert them to your travelling plans. If you are from the UK and suddenly start using your card in the middle of Peru, they are going to question the “fraudulent activity” and will block your card as a safety measure.

10. Check any visa requirements or entrance/exit fees.
These fees are not included in your airline ticket price, can arrange from $25-$200 and are required to enter or leave a country.

Local Research

11. Purchase your tickets now for the places you wish to visit.
Purchasing tickets in advance will help you skip queues and earn better deals which are targeted towards you.

12. Scout out & purchase some guide books.
You can get maps, keywords and basic phrases which give you great detail on certain sites ensuring you save money from purchasing information at the location you are visiting. Download any travel apps before you leave to avoid downloading the charging for your data.

13. Whilst out there, find local events.
There’s nothing worse than missing out on the best events in the city because you weren’t aware of them. I’m talking, ceremonies, festivals and annual events. Find the national dish and the best local cuisine. You’ll be kicking yourself if you’ve missed what it’s known for.

Electronics

14. Ensure you have a charger adapter.
There are different size voltage & plugs in different countries, if you want to use your phone or iPod a day after arriving. You’ll need to be charging it.

15. Check the voltage of your electronics.
So you’ve got a suitable adapter and you still can’t use your gadgets because the voltage isn’t high enough. Nightmare.

Luggage & packing

16. 1 outfit in your hand luggage bag.
You don’t want to be wearing a snowsuit because you’ve left the UK at 2am and in the freezing cold, get to your location, it’s absolutely boiling and you find your luggage has been lost. Firstly, you’ll be massively uncomfortable &… I don’t think there needs to be another reason. Pack something just incase this happens. Rather be safe than sorry right.

17. Do you check the bag in or not?
Every airline will have it’s own set of guidelines detailing how many bags can be checked in &/or carried on for free. To avoid any last minute fees before leaving, make sure you have done your research on this.

Lastly, above anything else. Just enjoy it. Experience the new location for everything it has to offer. Take lots of photos and fully immerse yourself into the local culture.

If you found this helpful, please consider sharing and help other people prepare for their next visit.

Generosity…

Let’s be honest, society today is a lot different to that of the past. It’s fair to say that one major change is how generous we are to each other these days. Entire communities used to get together, neighbours really knew one another and generally, people were a lot more giving of their money, resources and time. I can’t help but look around and see a society that has lost touch of its generosity.

Can we be blamed? I mean, so many of us are now rushing around from one activity to another, we have 101 tasks to do in the space of an hour, the phone is constantly pinging, the emails are coming in fast and rapid & the last thing on your mind is generosity. I know a lot of people send monthly donations to the favourite charity and sometimes you might even get a “That’s my good deed for the day” in a conversation with a colleague or a friend, but most of the time, service and generosity often get left behind to make way for all of life’s responsibilities.

You might be reading this now and wondering how you can perhaps give the generous behaviour a great kick start, you’ll be happy to know that below is a list compiled of some very practical but small steps you can start implementing to encourage more of the same behaviour around you.

  1. Say good morning to everyone.
  2. Hold a door open.
  3. Bring the office coffee. Or donuts, bagels, or fresh fruit.
  4. Say please and thank you all the time.
  5. Give up your seat.
  6. Really listen.
  7. Don’t interrupt.
  8. Return your shopping cart.
  9. Use driving etiquette. Let people merge. Yield at traffic signals appropriately. Don’t tailgate.
  10. Say I’m sorry when you’re in the wrong.
  11. Throw away your rubbish.

Daily habits that will help improve your health

By adding healthy nutritional habits into your daily routine, you can significantly improve your health & fitness. Outlined below is an easy to follow list which you can implement daily, which over time will create health & lifestyle improvements that are long-lasting.

1. IT’s ALL ABOUT THE TIMING.

  • 1. The breakfast conversation has been flying about for years now but you don’t want to be skipping it. Make sure to eat a balanced breakfast OR a meal replacement shake no later than one hour of waking up.
  • Avoid unhealthy food craving & ensure a balanced nutrition intake during the day, to keep your energy levels on an even keel. Eat something at least once every four hours.
  • Don’t eat after 1900, as a general rule.

2. BE MINDFUL AS YOU EAT

  • Overeating is easily induced by distracted eating so turn off your TV, hide the books & magazines and concentrate on your meal.  Generally you should stop eating just as you start to feel full. If after following the “eat every four hours rule” & you aren’t feeling hungry, eat 2-3 ounces of protein &/or 1 cup of raw vegetables.
  • Before working on your water intake goal, make sure you wait at least 30 minutes. If you are drinking throughout the day try to stop 30 minutes before you’re planning on eating again.
  •  Adding at least 3 tablespoons of healthy fat coconut oil to your diet each day is a great idea. You can find versions which are flavoured and unflavoured easily available that allows for all different taste preferences.

Goal setting, why it’s important and how you can set goals to propel your success.

I always grew up with the idea of setting SMART goals… I’m sure most of you have also grown up with this goal setting mentality and whilst some would argue it’s the best foundation to use when setting goals, I am going to tell you why I think making goals using the SMART method is a waste of your time and is killing your dreams.

Before I get started on that though, if you haven’t heard of a SMART goal before, you’ll want to know what one is and looks like.

The principles of SMART goals are as followed:

Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely

Specific: The idea that you have a greater chance of accomplishing something when it is specific as opposed to being general. This is often split into the 6 “W” questions.

*Who:      Who’s involved?

*What:     What is the goal?

*Where:    Is there a location involved?

*When:    How long are you giving yourself?

*Which:    Are there any constraints or requirements?

*Why:      We’ve spoken about your “Why” on another post. See Do you know your WHY? for detailed information, but basically, what is your reasons, the purpose or accomplishments to achieving your goal?

We’ll use the example of this would be a general goal: “Lose weight”
A specific goal would look like “Join a local gym, workout 2 days a week and lose this much weight per week”

Measurable –  Set concrete criteria so you can measure your progress to achieving your goals.

By measuring your progress, you ensure you stay on track & this helps you stay accountable and reach your target dates, gives you loads of good emotional feelings and keeps you driven to reach the goal.

Attainable – You’ll start to find ways your goals can come true the minute you find out what you WHY is. For more information, follow this link

When you work out what is important to you, you’ll naturally figure out ways to make it all work. Everything changes from your mindset & attitude, you develop skills and the capabilities to reach them. Previous obstacles are now opportunities that can help you hit your targets and reach your goals.

When you plan your steps carefully and establish your time frame, you can attain any goal you desire. Goals that have seemed unreachable are now becoming more and more attainable for you. It’s not your goals shredding down but you growing and developing into the person you need to be to reach them. Your self-image changes and you start to see yourself as worthy to reach the goals. You develop traits and a personality to follow that helps you on your path.

Realistic– I don’t like this whole “Set realistic goals or you’ll never achieve them”

If you set your goals ridiculously high and it’s a failure, you will fail above everyone else’s success.

I’m not saying you should be competing with other people for setting goals….  But if you set your goals low enough that you know you can do them without a risk of failing, do you really need or want it that badly?

I guess (and this is only my interpretation of it) setting a realistic goal means a goal you are willing and able to work towards & it needs to make sense to you. There’s no point in saying you want to end world hunger if you really deep down want a huge mansion and 10 Mustangs outside with a helicopter waiting in the garden. You are the only one who can decide how high your goal should be, break it down into smaller goals (See time) and break it up bit by bit.

Again, a high goal is actually so much easier to reach than a low goal… You might be thinking I’m crazy here.  A low goal exerts literally no or very little motivational force. Look back at what you’ve achieved & I bet some of the hardest things you’ve conquered have actually been the easiest because you knew where the journey was taking you.

High goals = Motivation = Emotional Success

Timely – Set your time frame. Massively important!!! If there’s no time frame, there’s no urgency. How many times have you told yourself, “I’ll do something tomorrow”. That was like last year right? How about the “I’ll get around to it someday” How many more garden projects are you going to start? It doesn’t work.

If your life gets busy & you can’t do it at the time, it’s different, but tell yourself that you are taking a break from it, and set it in your diary a week before you are due to start again, then every day before with reminders and cue points to get you back on where you left it. This will trigger your unconsciousness to bring all the memories back so you can start back with the same emotion.

Daily affirmations you can use in order to become successful

Just like setting goals daily, weekly, monthly and annually, it’s also vital that you use daily affirmations and create a routine that is going to help you become successful.

“I don’t believe in positive mindset nonsense” “I’m lucky anyway, so don’t need to use affirmations”

(I have actually heard both of these multiple times). It’s great if life is going the way you’d like, should you hit an obstacle however, how strong is your mindset going to be & are you going to be able to get back up?
